Event: Class of Chairs 2013

A few weeks ago I passed by a design exhibition, titled Class of Chairs 2013, by Interior and Spatial Designer Aseel Alyaqoub, Architect and Digital artist Jassim Alsaddah, and Architect Yousef Almehdari. The exhibition was held at Contemporary Art Platform Gallery in Shuwaikh.

On my way to the exhibition I honestly didn't know what to expect, I assumed it was just another exhibition exploring new elements of pure chair design. I didn't expect it to be an exhibition where they actually linked chair design with serious social psychological issues within our community in a very light-hearted and cleaver way.

I met with one of the creative brains behind Class of ChairsJassim Al Saddah, who happens to be my cousin too and I'm extremely proud of his creativity and talent. Jassim explained to me that Class of Chairsis a sarcastic commentary on the stereotypical characters found within school life, the representation of the high school hierarchy and social groups found in playgrounds and classrooms.

The collection of chairs is a literal adaptation of the different student typecasts found in schools in Kuwait. Each chair represents an individual high school persona, where the character’s attributes are translated in the design aspect of its material and functional use.

As I walked pass each and every chair, I started to recall nostalgic scenes of school memories. And I thought to myself, this does not only applies to school life, this applies to life in general, whether at family/friends gatherings, work, or anywhere basically. It managed to create a relatable experience to each and every visitor. Let me walk you through some of my favorite chairs...

The "Nerd" chair

 The "Hairy Guy" chair

The "Goody two shoes" chair

 The "Teacher's Pet" chair

The "Attention Seeker" chair and boy we have a lot of those in Kuwait!

The "One... that everybody used to hate for no apparent reason"... sad but funny!

The "Cheap Skate"

 The "Hippie" chair...

The schizophrenic: "I will never get bored of myself."

That's me chatting with my cousin. Thank you Yousef Al Ibrahim for taking this photo.

The Perv: "Right click, save image as...."

The "Heart Breaker": "It wasn't me...."

Miu Miu Pays Tribute to the Middle East

Everyone who knows me, knows that I have a soft spot for bag charms. They're fun, cute, and add a dose of irresistible character to your plain handbag. So when I got the news about Miu Miu paying tribute to the Middle Eastern culture by presenting an exclusive playful yet multifunctional accessories in luxurious precious skin, I got excited intrigued. The round-shaped charms has the Arabic alphabet, each piece presenting a letter design with metallic hues and vibrant colors. They're cute, nothing groundbreaking. I'm not sure if these bags charms would step up my bag charms game, but I guess it depends on their price tag and how "exclusively" exclusive they are. Maybe they'll grow on me? I don't know... What do you think? The charms should be available exclusively in  Miu Miu   Boutiques throughout our region.

Magical Mode

As anyone who regularly reads Confashions may know, there are some designers I’ve been obsessed with for quite some time: one is the genius Erdem , the other is Nicholas Kirkwood , and Pierre Hardy . And because their designs are somehow easily accessible online and offline, I had the pleasure of featuring some of their creations and showing them the love they deserve. That said, there is one designer I’ve been particularly smitten with for quite some time. He has always been on the top of my favorite designers list ever since I was introduced to his designs by my fabulous fellow fashionisto Adnan Z Manjal   a couple of years back : Saudi designer Mohammed Ashi . I always wished I featured him more. I couldn’t because his pieces are very exclusive and as far as I know not stocked anywhere here. This clearly isn't just another post on my obvious love for Mohammed Ashi’s designs or the quality of his clothes as I have done that previously. Ashi simply deserves his very own epic p...

Altuzarra or Aquazzura?

That is the question. It took me a whole season to finally tell these two brands apart, and this season, there's no mistake, each brand is now engraved in my fashion database like a personalized Tiffany's pen. And this Resort 2015 season, I'm head over heels with their flats, on display now at AlOthman Boutique . Altuzarra's version comes in a tonal-gray water snake and are decorated with beige shells, red beads and silver sequins. Aquazzura's lace-up sandals come in a beautiful shade of apple green, and will work with white or bright colored casual summer outfit.  After much thought and sole-searching, I have decided to go for the  Altuzarra   sandals. They're safely stored in my closet, waiting for the dust and the cold to go away.  Which pair would you go for?
